Project Overview
Two standalone interactive learning tools built for masters swimmers and coaches who need accurate, immediately usable content at the pool. The first, Why Water Pushes Back, translates hydrodynamic drag theory into poolside-ready knowledge built around a single transfer goal: a swimmer who can self-diagnose and self-correct in real time without an instructor present. The second, Kick It, is a five-tab stroke technique reference covering kick mechanics across all four strokes, plus beat patterns. Both tools are grounded in biomechanics research, reviewed for accuracy before publication, and designed for use on a phone between sets.
Pedagogical Framework

Dual Coding Theory
An animated torpedo/shopping cart visualizer encodes body position spatially before any verbal explanation appears. Every concept card pairs physics language with proprioceptive sensation. Visual and verbal channels fire simultaneously throughout.

Cognitive Load Theory
Three progressive tabs prevent competing concepts from loading simultaneously. Zone 1 builds the mental model. Zone 2 goes deeper. Zone 3 transfers to action. Accordion cards apply the same logic at concept level: label visible, depth on demand.

Anchored Instruction
Every concept is tethered to a physical sensation the swimmer has already experienced. "Swimming uphill." "The water grabs you." The physics arrives as the name for a known experience, not as unfamiliar information to memorize.
Design Decisions
- Backward design from single transfer goal: poolside self-correction without instructor
- Sensation language ("Feel It") used as primary retrieval anchor, not definition
- Silence Drill placed before concept explanation: experience precedes taxonomy
- Diagnostic is tappable and checkable for active mid-practice use

Every tool is formatted for the context where learning must activate: a phone on on a pool deck between sets, not a desk.

Design Highlights
Animated Body-Position Visualizer
An SVG animation alternates between torpedo and shopping cart body positions, encoding the core concept visually before any text is read. Labels and sub-text shift with the animation to reinforce dual coding.
Progressive Disclosure Architecture
Three sticky tabs manage cognitive load at the zone level. Accordion cards manage it at the concept level. Learners control depth: scanning is fast, going deep is one tap.
Tappable Splash Diagnostic
Six checkable rows map visual/auditory cues to drag causes and fixes. Designed to be used during practice, not read after it. Tap a splash pattern, get the diagnosis and the correction immediately.
Context-Calibrated Language
Every sentence is written for a swimmer standing on a pool deck with 90 seconds between sets. Short sentences. Active verbs. No hedging. Tone is coach-to-athlete, not textbook-to-student.

Progressive Disclosure
Each tab reveals content in a deliberate sequence: intention prompt, concept to nuance, video, error, summary, cue. The learner is never asked to hold more than one concept at a time before it is reinforced.

Embodied Cognition
Intention prompts before each tab prime the swimmer to notice a specific sensation in the water. The "Take this to the water" cue at the end of each tab bridges cognitive instruction and physical practice by compressing the lesson into a short phrase a swimmer can recall mid-stroke.

Desirable Difficulty
Content is written to create a small amount of effortful processing rather than frictionless reading. Counterintuitive framing: the kick's job is not to propel" creates cognitive surprise that improves retention over smooth, expected prose.
Design Decisions
- Content fact-checked against biomechanics research before publication: accuracy flagged before polish
- Three points per stroke ordered big concept to nuanced detail, not sequential or arbitrary
- Deck cue removed from Beat Patterns: the page teaches pattern awareness, not in-water sensation
- Video embeds paired with "what to watch for" checklists to direct attention before viewing
- Quick reference tables added at the bottom of each stroke for poolside scanning

Each tab opens with a single priming sentence that directs the swimmer's attention before they enter the water. Grounded in embodied cognition research: reading immediately before attempting movement improves motor learning.
Guided Video Viewing
Every embedded video is followed by a "what to watch for" checklist that gives the swimmer three specific perceptual targets before they watch. Transforms passive viewing into active observation.
Quick Reference Tables
Each stroke ends with a do this / not this table giving swimmers a 15-second scan before getting in the pool. Reduces cognitive load at the moment of use without removing depth from the main content.
